Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Our district has done a wonderful job in investing in a new curriculum that promotes enjoyable reading and writing for all. However, students are not being as successful as they could be because we do not have as many books as we could. My goal is to change this in my classroom.
I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to twenty-five, fifth graders throughout the day.
Many of these readers are below grade-level and I want to provide them with materials that will inspire them to read and write more.
My Project
In the past couple of years our school district has switched to a literacy program that encourages me to read a picture book to my class daily. The growth I have witnessed in my classroom is extraordinary! Our conversations go from critiquing how authors wrote the book to making connections to our own lives.
Students have the best thoughts, and I want to keep exposing them to new books to keep enhancing these thoughts.
One of my favorite things to do is pause in the middle of a book and say turn and talk. The class immediately erupts into discussion. I am so excited to read these new books with my class and listen to all their thoughts!
