This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are part of a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. The majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, and they are doing their best with distance learning amidst all the chaos. Most of my students lack any resources to be able to complete assignments. Despite these challenges our students always have enthusiastic smiles ready to give their teachers "their best." They never give up and their love of learning is endless. Working with them every day is a true gift and they inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
The teaching landscape has completely changed in these unprecedented times due to Covid-19. Virtual remote learning has made it more challenging to reach the needs of our students. Inside the classroom we were readily able to help support students by providing immediate scaffolds, visuals, and intense modeling.
Virtually, we are trying to simulate the same genuine learning experience that a student would have inside the classroom at home.
Technology has always played a major role inside the classroom but now more ever having access to the ‘right’ technology for remote instruction can help keep our students just as engaged as they were inside the classroom!
A document camera is a great tool for teachers to take what used to be individual assignments and turn them into class assignments, creating more discussion, interaction, and maintaining students’ attention. Furthermore, teachers can explicitly teach and model content demonstrating elaborate steps, display rich authentic literature, and display pages of student material from their perspective. In addition, use of a document camera enables teachers to stimulate learning by helping to promote collaboration through rich authentic discussion. Hands on centers and learning stations are integral to student learning. A document camera also helps teachers model center materials and proper use of manipulatives!
