Blossoming Biologists: Hands-on Activities for Students

Help me give my students the hands-on laboratory activities they missed out on during the pandemic.

My Students

Whether it is environmental justice, epidemiology, animal behavior, or genetic engineering, my biology students are naturally curious and interested to know how science applies to their daily lives. Many of them want to go into STEM fields in the future, and hands-on laboratory experiences give them both practical skills and experience using the scientific method. Labs are the student's favorite part of class, and allow students with a wide variety of skills and experiences to participate and be scientists.

Over 60% of Washington students come from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds, and spent the entire 2020-2021 school year learning remotely.

My Project

Like so many other teachers, I worked extremely hard to create engaging virtual activities for my classes last year. Although the students showed incredible resilience and determination, sometimes there just isn't a good substitute for the hands-on learning we regularly have in biology.

These laboratory materials will allow my biology students to explore challenging concepts in an engaging and hands-on way.

The cell communication and biotech lab kits contain materials that were especially difficult to substitute during distance learning, and provide a realistic preparation for a future in the biological sciences. The pillbugs will be both our class pets and a valuable teaching tool - the students will observe both their behavior and understand their role as essential detritivores in ecological systems.
