Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are smart, compassionate, resilient leaders. My students are growing up in deep east Oakland where poverty and violence are prevalent. Nevertheless, the community at my school have loved and supported these children since they have been in Pre-K. However, even though they are loved and supported, poverty is still prevalent. The majority of my students are on free lunch and rely on snacks I provide in my classroom for breakfast in the morning.

My students are in third grade, and love to read.

My students love to read with and to stuffed animals and can easily find themselves immersed in stories of action and fantasy. My students also love when we do whole class read alouds and we just finished the wonderful book Matilda!

My students deserve the best education and I want to advocate for them. My students are blooming artists, politicians, community activists, athletes and scholars. Their goals and dreams are real and warrant advocates to help them pursue them.

My Project

The majority of my students are reading at a second grade level and the books in this project are all their current reading level. In the current library, there are not enough books at their reading level to give every child a book at their level or to read new books. My students love to independently read on the carpet and read out loud to numerous stuffed animals as their audience.

These students are underfunded, but their imaginations are overflowing.

The students love escaping into different time periods, and embarking on adventures with magical creatures or learning about strong, positive personality traits. In guided reading, small groups read with me at a pull out table and the stools provide a comfortable seating area for them to build up their reading confidence and read out loud to one another.
