My students love to read!
I teach eighth grade language arts in a diverse urban Connecticut school district. Our school population has varying socioeconomic backgrounds and levels of achievement; also, many students have learned English as a second language.
One aspect of school that my students all enjoy is their Book Clubs -- small groups of kids that choose a book to read, and then respond to the text through writing and discussion. Choice is an essential part of Book Clubs because students are much more invested in reading books that interest them, rather than "required reading" dictated by a teacher. This is the first year I have implemented Book Clubs and I like it just as much as the students, who are still a little amazed. "Do we really get to read cool books and talk about them with our friends? That's our assignment?" Yes, really!
Our school district has purchased several sets of young adult titles for each grade to use for Book Clubs. However, my students like the books so much that they read them too quickly and I run out of new books to give them!
Some students are buying their own books to read, but it not all students can do that. (I have also purchased some books, but my budget is limited.) It would be wonderful to have a few more books on hand. I requested the Twilight sequels because the students love the series and I already have some copies of the first book. I requested copies of Story of a Girl because it is very popular with the students; I borrowed five copies from another teacher, but so many kids want to read it and I could use some more to go around. The Outsiders book on CD would be good to have because that book is a core novel in our district's eighth grade curriculum -- and well-liked by students -- and having the audio-book would make it more accessible to struggling readers. Finally, I requested the encyclopedia of scary creatures because I think the students would enjoy it, especially after reading the Twilight series.
First of all, your help will make my students very happy -- I can just picture them saying, "We have Eclipse now? Awesome!" Secondly, your help will improve my students' reading comprehension because you will be providing them with high-interest literature; the more the students read, the better they get at it!
