Vampires. Bloodsucking. Dirty. A bird. Students have a lot of misconceptions about bats and the mythology surrounding bats. In this project, students will participate in a month-long study on bats. They will learn the facts and fiction surrounding bats. In addition, they will do activities on echolocation and sound, bat droppings' and ammonia's benefits as fertilizer, how mother bats use their sense of smell to help identify their babies, and how sensitive bats' ears are. After learning about bats, students will create imovies to educate others about bats. Twenty first-grade students will participate in the study. The resources will be shared with the other first grade class (another twenty students) and will be used in future years. My school uses hands-on learning and technology to engage students in the learning process and to help students develop the skills to be critical thinkers and life-long learners. The resources needed for this project are books, DVDs, and art supplies. Please help my students learn the truth about these fascinating mammals so that they too can be wowed and can teach others.
