Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As adults we think of reading as a type of recreation. A time to relax and escape. We also discuss books with our friends. I would love for my students to develop a love for reading, and for them to understand that talking about and responding to books can be a joy.
Myself and my students live in Georgia.
We love our class and we work hard everyday to reach our full potential. The area from which my students come is very low income. The students need things for school that their families cannot afford. Our PTA is also not very active due to almost all of our families having little time away from their work. Our school is 98% free and reduced lunch, and unfortunately our school does not have the funds to purchase everything that would help the students to enjoy the school day.
My Project
I would love to spark an interest in reading with my students by getting some high interest books that are on their reading level. We have reading groups where they talk about books, but this sometimes tends to bore the children. I recently had an idea to allow the students to blog about their books. We started it and the students are loving it. They blog each day about whatever novel they are reading, they then comment on each others blogs. I want to keep the fun going, so my next step is to begin podcasts. The students would create a pod cast with the flip camera and post it to our blog. This would allow them to do everything from act out scenes to make a cartoon. That is where the other supplies come in. I am asking for things like post-it notes and art supplies to allow children who are shy in front of the camera to create art about their book and explain it as their podcast.
One of the most important things that we can do for children who read below level is to get them interested and motivate them to want to read more.
I also want the students to realize that talking about and responding to books is fun. Your donation of any item from our list would make a huge impact in our classroom. My children are wonderful, smart students who just need a little bit of extra motivation. Your donation could be just the motivation they need!
