My students need Magna Tiles because blocks offer many ways for young dual language learners to explore, express themselves, become self-reliant, and develop new friendships.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a first grade SEI classroom in East Boston. All of my students are English Language Learners with an ELD level 1-3. My classroom consists of twenty curious students who love to come to school to learn and spend time with their friends.
Their favorite part of the week is coming together for, "Studios".
Here the students can create and build in the block studio, be creative in the art and drama studios or sit quietly and read a book in the library studio. Whatever their choice, it is a time when students are able to express themselves and increase their self-esteem.
My Project
The Magna Tiles will help my students in many ways. For example, they will learn how to problem solve either by following a plan for building or using their imagination. They will also help with creativity because the tiles can be moved freely and combined in countless ways.
Academically, tiles offer opportunities to test hypotheses and build scientific reasoning.
Students can also practice measurement, comparison, estimation and symmetry.
Finally, they can follow their own plan, or share a friend's vision and work together to create something which will give them a feeling of success. These are some examples of the learning possibilities that block play supports.
