I serve as the School Counselor at a Title I School with a predominantly African-American population, with most being from a single-parent home, and a growing Hispanic population. Behavior problems and discipline referrals are at an all time high and my goal is to try and decrease that number by at least 5%, especially with our African-American makes in grades 3-5. In order to do this I’m looking at positive behavior strategies that will increase the motivation for students to exhibit good behavior and to encourage them to follow the rules.
The goal of this project is to help create a Cat Cash Celebration for those students in grades K-5 who have earned enough cash to participate.
Students earn cash from teachers throughout the building for following the rules, exemplifying model student behavior, being kind to others, you name it and they can earn it. They will have a set goal for the amount of cash each time there is a celebration. They will get to have time to play games and have a fun time, and hopefully win some cool prizes. The items for this project can be used more than once.
The goal of these Blissful Behavior celebrations is for the students who are not participating to get excited about good behavior and start following the rules and making better choices so that they can participate. This will help us to decrease the number of discipline referrals and days spent in ISS if we can get them on board with positive behavior.
The items in this project will be used for positive behavior celebrations throughout the year.
This activity will foster sharing and getting along with others, as well as, help those who may be shy and not otherwise play in a group setting. The students will have to work together to decide who will play first, thus creating a positive learning environment when they are back inside the classroom with their peers.
