A typical day in my classroom involves my students exploring various materials like manipulatives, blocks, art supplies, books and puzzles available in the classroom. This happens at various times throughout our day in which the students choose who they will engage with and what they will play with.
Our school is in a very low income area.
The students in our preschool program come to us with several risk factors (single parent homes, coming from war stricken countries, multiple families living in a small home, limited education/ work, and poverty).
The students in my class are 4 and 5 years old and come into the classroom with limited English and are thriving to learn anything and everything they can. They are looking to gain meaningful academic and social experiences through hands-on learning while building relationships with peers. These students are very eager to come to school and learn how to love school using materials that many may not have available to them outside of school.
The light filters will make a difference in my classroom by providing my students with a calming environment during learning. The children in preschool are gaining several new experiences which alone is very overwhelming but providing them with a soothing place to learn will increase focus and attention.
Filtering the light will help anxious students calm down while maintaining a peaceful environment for all the students.
My students will increase their focus and be relaxed while learning through a variety of experiences and different parts of the day. Overall I feel the filters will benefit all students in the classroom by creating a serene place for all students to learn and become an engaged learner.
