"Poverty is like punishment for a crime you didn't commit."-Eli Khamarov.
I teach at a Title I school, where a large percentage of the student body lives at or below the poverty line.
Many of them deal with circumstances that most adults would not be able to deal with, yet they do, all the while they are trying to learn. They are learning the skills they need to be successful in life.
Working with our most vulnerable population, I see this first hand. While at times, it can be frustrating, there is nothing more rewarding than knowing you helped a child, living in poverty, gain the tools necessary for success in life, and more importantly changed their vision of what the future can mean for them.
My Project
There is nothing less conducive to learning than harsh fluorescent lights overhead. They can cause migraines and, to people with sensory issues, they can cause anxiety. I don't know who had the "bright" idea to put them in schools.
"Just as an unhealthy physical environment impedes learning, a healthy and well designed school and classroom can boost learning."-Sean Slade
The environment in your classroom should be the second teacher. The right environment can prevent classroom management issues, and encourage desired behaviors from your students. By donating to this project you will help me create the kind of environment that will boost learning and curtail behavior issues.
This year I have several students with sensory issues, and several with behavior issues. Often I believe behaviors are coming from an unmet sensory issue or visual over-stimulation. By filtering the harsh fluorescent lights and providing calming, sensory items like a small fountain and a Newton's Cradle for the reflection area, I believe I can help my students avoid a lot of the undesired behaviors they've exhibited in the past. Behaviors that can impede learning.
Even students without these sensory needs will benefit from softer lighting, and a calm environment. They will also benefit from their crew members having their needs met. Fewer interruptions due to behavior issues is good for everyone in the room. A sense of calm and peace is beneficial to everyone's learning and makes the day more enjoyable for all.
