Bless 2 Grade Levels with Reading Subscriptions!

My students need individual subscriptions for Time for Kids! They will get weekly non-fiction reading practice as well as current events. They will also have more exposure to working with maps, captions, comprehension, & diagrams, etc.

My Students

My class comes from an area in Winston Salem that is very diverse. We are close to downtown and a major hospital practically sits in our parking lot. On one end of the street there are doctors living nearby in the more historic areas and surrounded by medical buildings. But on the other side of the street we have the not-so-historic, run-down side. Our school is a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. Forget reduced-price lunch. Here, all kids are guaranteed a warm breakfast and lunch free of charge.

This year our school has the highest number of students enrolled from the Red Cross Homeless Shelter than we've ever seen.

Many other students are bused to us from the Children's Home, for orphans and domestic abuse victims and their children, which is right around the next corner.

Another thing that sets us apart, is that the district HAG program is held at our school. Polar opposites right!?! The HAG program brings an extreme shift to the economic diversity of our students. The two sides couldn't be more father apart than the north and south pole.

My Project

This project will fund our school's entire 3rd grade AND 2nd grade for individual subscriptions for TIME FOR KIDS!

There are nearly 100 kids per grade level so this project will benefit 8 classrooms!

With this magazine we will be able to do hands-on work with text features that are common in non-fiction texts on a weekly basis- like diagrams, maps, captions, texts boxes, etc... This magazine will bring current events to life for our students and will help our readers understand world events! With TIME FOR KIDS, curious kids AND their families will be enriched, enlightened—and entertained. The issues will take students and their families on adventures to faraway lands where they will meet other children and learn about world cultures. Colorful maps, entertaining photos and clear graphics bring events to life.
