Blending English and Science

My Students

Ask not what English can do for math and science; ask what math and science can do for English! Well, with this activity, all disciplines will be happy! Students get the best of both worlds with Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything.

The English I students at this small, charter school come from all across the county.

They represent every walk of life but come together in order to receive the best education they can. With a focus in math and science, our school needs to put forth the best math and science students; therefore, it is essential that they practice those skills every chance they get. The students are eager to learn and gladly accept challenges. One of the major challenges that is routinely problematic is having enough books for the students, especially because the school does not have a library.

My Project

In an attempt to incorporate more math and science knowledge into the English I curriculum, my students are required to read a chapter per week out of a nonfiction math or science book. The chosen text is Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, an easily accessible read for ninth graders that provides a detailed history of science concepts that are reinforced throughout high school, college, and the work force. Students have to read the chapter, answer reading guide questions, and prepare a written assignment that analyzes essay components, such as the thesis, key points, and supporting details. Hands-on activities, class discussions, and debates will also occur throughout the reading of the book. Because I teach at a math and science school, the reading of this text can only benefit them in multiple aspects of their education.

Some of my students will be able to afford the book on their own, but for most of them, buying a book or even finding a way to the library to rent a book is highly unrealistic.

Physical copies of the book ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. Reading Bryson's text will provide background knowledge in order for students to gain a foundation for current and future science classes. Reading will also help them analyze nonfiction from an English perspective.
