it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember having an art center where your teacher gave you time to paint pictures that coincided with what was being taught in reading that day? Do you remember orally presenting your art piece, as well as the knowledge of what you learned, in front of the class? I want that for my students.
My students attend a Title I school in New York, which means that 98% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school also offers a healthy snack. Being that our school is located in a high poverty area, our student don't have the means to buy everyday school supplies but they love to learn and have fun doing it. I am a special educator in a self-contained special needs classroom. I want my students to have the same advantages that other children have.
My Project
Last year, my school started using a new reading program. The reading program is great but I want to extend upon it with my special needs children. Children, generally speaking, need to be engaged in what they are learning. As educators, we know that all children learn differently and it is our job to find out how they learn that way we can use the best practices in our classes.
My students need table top easel, paintbrushes, easel paper, paint cup carriers, paint cups and paint to differentiate literacy skills and strategies. My students would use the art supplies during our literacy block where they would be learning how to close read and respond to their reading. As a way to differentiate their reading responses, instead of writing they could draw/paint and orally contribute to the skill or strategy learned that day. Using the paintings would also invoke classroom discussions and allow the students to be accountable for their learning.
Having these art supplies in our classroom would work wonders in keeping my students engaged.
I would also be blending art and literacy together and making it more enjoyable for my students. I am sure I would get more classroom participation if my students know that what they are doing is fun and they are inevitably learning at the same time. Your support is greatly appreciated.
