Our high school students live in Honolulu, HI, and they love music. They are passionate about music and music-making. Music is what keeps them motivated to come to school. They excel in music, despite our school being situated in the midst of five federal housing projects.
Most of our students come from homes of highest poverty.
Our school has a 70% highly disadvantaged rate.
Beautiful music comes out of our orchestra room. Our students play with great passion. Music is what they excel at. Our students would never have been able to play in an orchestra were it not for the school orchestra program.
My Project
Our school orchestra students need black 3 ring binders to put their music sheets in for class practice and for performances. Many of our students are unable to afford basic supplies for school. The black 3 ring binders will allow our students to meet the class and performance requirement of having a black 3 ring binder. The 3 ring binder will help students to be organized, have all the music sheets, and then be able to practice in class and at home. This will optimize their learning because when students continually do not have their music sheets, they are unable to play in class, at home, and at performances. Students without a 3 ring binder are given the music sheets, only to have them lost or worse yet, left on the music stand or the floor after class because they have no where to put them. The teacher often ends up purchasing the black 3 ring binders for students who are unable to afford one. Having a black 3 ring binder will enable students to focus on playing the music in class rather than having to get the same music sheets again and again because they have lost them due to not having a black 3 ring binder of their own. Having a black 3 ring binder will also teach students organizational skills and will give students a sense of pride in having their own nice, new, black 3 ring binder. The black 3 ring binder is an essential class supply that our students cannot afford to purchase. It will help our students to learn and play more music to reach their fullest potentials. Mahalo!
