My students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Most are poverty stricken and come from broken families. The students I serve are emotionally disturbed and struggle with social acceptance. These kids are special because they are simply amazing. They are smart, funny, compassionate and work very hard to accomplish their goals, even when society is against them the most. My students go home in the evening and some do not have food to eat or clean clothes to wear. Most of them cannot complete homework for the simple lack of materials. These kiddos thrive on sensory play, snacks, and STEM activities that get the moving and using their hands to create whatever their imagination dreams up. These are the toughest kids in our school, but they have the most love to share.
My Project
The items that we have chosen together as a class already have a home; we just need a little more assistance getting them through the door. The sensory items are going to be used for my students with emotional disturbances who need help calming down when they are frustrated and need something concrete in their hands in order to get their brain thinking clearly. The fidget toys will be used to help all my kids focus better so they can complete academic activities for longer periods of time. The LEGO's are going to be used to create a LEGO wall within our classroom. We want to use the LEGO boards to place on the wall and use the LEGO's for classroom social skills lesson, and a means of communication for those who cannot always find the words to say. The STEM activities will be used to engage students during science and give them the opportunity to work hands on. The snacks will be able to provide my students with something to eat before they go home each day; most of them won't eat until they come back to school the next day.
