My Students

You walk into a galaxy themed classroom and all you can think about is math. However, there is only one teacher so it's difficult to grab her attention. You figure it's not important. This is the problem many of my students face. They need small group attention to fix these major problems.

Blast off to the Undiscovered Math Galaxy!

With a painted wall mural of a math solar system, students walk into a classroom covered in math decorations. The students are very energetic in my class because many cannot sit still. They always want to stand and raise their hands to answer questions! I start very basic with the lesson and then tell them its time to kick it up a notch because its going to get hot! They all warm up their shoulders and get excited when the numbers get bigger. When we reach spicy hot, some students can't keep their feet on the floor. The problem is the excitement is there but the focus is missing. With a classroom of about 25 students, many lose track and make silly mistakes that could easily be changed. These students need CENTERS! They need to work on problems in small groups to focus on certain skills and then allow the teacher to rotate and work with those that pass the radar. The students love math but they need your help to bring in better resources.

My Project

Starting with a timer, students will always be on task and not waste time. With a class broken up into centers, students will be able to have a hands on experience and receive the small group instruction. Every student loves to play house and now they could pretend to go shopping. With a cash register, students can play the role of cashier and learn to add money and subtract change. Next, improve literacy and have students read about math and its different uses. With a lack of classroom time, remediation is constantly needed. In centers, students can spiral certain skills while the teacher works with a small group. Lastly, after a long week and testing on Friday, what better way to end the class with a classroom math game to keep students competitive and enjoying math!

All of my students are in the 3rd and 4th grade, but a large portion are over-age.

That is because they were not taught properly. By creating a center themed classroom, I will be able to give the students the attention they need to pass. This will also keep the students active and not lose focus. My students need these resources to get back on track.
