Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is nothing more frustrating than being unable to effectively communicate, express your thoughts, your needs or wants to others. That's what it like for my students.
I have the pleasure of teaching 10 of the most positive and courageous middle school students with special needs.
Our school is located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. I teach students with moderate to severe disabilities. They have a variety of disabilities, such as, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and rare genetic disorders like Lowe's Syndrome. Many of my students are medically fragile, however that doesn't stop them from having an eagerness to WANT to learn.
Our class focuses on academics, functional & life skills, and communication. Many of my students are in wheelchairs, and some of my students can only communicate through the use of augmentative or assistive devices. They are extremely special and it would be a great achievement if we could add some new technology into their daily lives.
My Project
I am requesting a Windows Surface Tablet to assist those that have communication, motor and visual deficits. Through the use of Apps on this type of device, we have seen success and independence blossom within my students. Using this type of portable technology assist student learning outside of the classroom in various types of environments.
I am also asking for talking alarm wallet and talking calculators to assist with those that have difficulty with reading written words. These types of academic tools are portable, lightweight, easy to manipulate for those with fine motor deficits, and can assist with communication. These items will be used during our community exploration class as well as the classroom setting.
By supporting our class YOU are making a difference in education and a very special persons life.
You are giving my students a voice and encouraging their independence. By supporting our project, you are making the difference that will instill a sense of self worth and positively impact their educational journey. Thanks for your support!
