My Project

I want to create a Space Station in my dramatic play area. In my classroom, I strive to immerse my students in their learning and give them environments that are authentic and relevant to their lives. The "Play Rocket" and rocket tent with astronaut costumes will create the perfect area for my children to explore in space. The busy boards will be used as space control panels. Throughout the room, children will be given multiple opportunities to look at books about space, build rocket ships, and engage in pretend play with space shuttles, puzzles, and games. All of these materials will ignite inquiry, wonder, and student engagement.

“Childhood is filled with natural wonder and curiosity.

The learning environment must reflect a classroom and outdoor space that inspires a sense of wanting to investigate, to find out and to explore.” – Kathy Walker. This project would significantly impact my overall learning environment for my children. I have many goals for my students within this project. Students will plan, build, and draw various space items such as space ships, rovers, and satellites. My children will read and view pictures from the space-themed books. My preschoolers will work together to "launch" their various rocket ships. They will count backwards during each launch. During play, students build social skills such as taking turns, sharing, waiting, and expressing their feelings. Through exploration and play, students will build stronger oral language skills, vocabulary, and overall knowledge.

My PreK classroom is a needs-based program. Students primarily qualify for placement through income eligibility. Many of my students are overcoming environments of poverty, domestic violence, and abandonment. My goal is to make their first year of school magical, engaging and high interest. I strive to create immersive experiences where my students can get lost in learning and exploration.
