Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education." - Albert Einstein. In my class we are the exception to the rule. By integrating STEM and STEAM activities, I hope to encourage a love for wonder, amazement, and curiosity that can be found through art and literature.
My students are an amazing group of students with wide ranges of interests.
Sports, dance, music, science, computers, and much more are interests that my students share with one another. Although they have these interests, we want to encourage them to increase their interest in other areas. Our school encourages units and lessons using STEM and STEAM education, along with after school activities that promote students learning in these areas as well. Many students clamor for the opportunity to participate in the various after school art and science activities, but through this project, they will be able to experience this in the classroom.
My Project
Students at various grade levels will use the different books (Wonder, My Brother Sam is Dead, and The Fire-Makers Daughter) to do literature circles, open reading, and other ELA focused tasks and lessons. Additionally, in conjunction with each book, we will be using the colored pencils, watercolors, and sketchbooks to create art projects that reflect what occurs in the story. To help build and improve their understanding of the stories, students will be required to illustrate events from the story, recreate items seen in the story, and create art projects that depict theme, main idea, and other critical literature traits from the story. Through these activities, the students will have to think critically about what they have read, which will build better reading habits and skills through the use of art.
With budgets being cut in many, if not most, districts throughout this state, one of the first things to get cut is auxiliary education (art, science, music, etc.).
The goal at our school and in our program is to keep these at the forefront through well designed lessons and activities. By utilizing grants and programs like this, we hope to encourage our students to experience art, science, and other activities they would be otherwise unable to participate in.
