Blast Off: Rocketry and Movement

Help me give my students move! Students love building rockets to learn about forces and energy. Students also need stand or fidgeting, while learning which promotes emotional regulation and concentration.

My Project

The two main focus areas of my project focus on getting kids movement in the classroom and excited to learn. The first half of the project uses some of the supplies to allow students to construct and launch their own model rocket to learn about energy and forces involved in rocket launches. This is most often the highlight of my student's year and so exciting to watch their faces light up when they launch a rocket that they constructed themselves! This is especially important in trying to get kids to appreciate science after an extended period of online learning which did not include very many hands-on labs and projects. The second focus is on providing students with quiet ways to fidget within the classroom. Weather students are sitting or standing these items will allow them to get some movement into learning. Studies have shown that when used correctly, fidgets can help students self-regulate their emotions and increase their ability to focus. I have added a variety of items in order to allow choice for students in which ways movement during instructions works best for them. The goal of my project is to keep students engaged with fun hands-on project such as rockets and increased focus in the classroom by allowing an outlet for energy or students with ADHD needs be successful in the classroom. As a result of the pandemic there has been an increase in the number of students with anxiety and ADHD in the classroom who will strongly benefit from these fidgets or sensory tools.
