My students need the Pitsco Straw Rockets Package so they can learn how the forces of flight and other variables affect the flight of a rocket during a STEM unit in their Aerospace class.
My school is on the East Side of St. Paul, Minnesota, and is made up of a diverse group of middle school students. Most of the students are learning English as their second language and come from low-income backgrounds. We have an aerospace focus at our school, which gives students the opportunity to learn about aviation, outer space, space flight, and engineering. They are learning not only the subject matter, but also what it means to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. My students are curious, creative, kinesthetic learners who thrive during hands-on activities in my classroom.
My Project
Students will be using these straw rocket launchers to perform controlled experiments during a STEM unit. Students will be engaged in an engineering design challenge that combines the science of force and flight with engineering and and data analysis to design a straw rocket that will land in a specific landing zone.
The Pitsco Straw Rocket Package will allow students the opportunity to test variables, create rockets, and have fun!
Having two launchers will allow more students to be engaged in the lessons and experiments because they won't have to wait as long for their turn. Launching straw rockets also gives students a hands-on experience with rockets and forces of flight, and it will give them opportunities to apply their knowledge of how different variables affect the flight of the rockets.
