Blast Into the Blue: Classroom Rocketry

My Students

One of the greatest things I can give my students is the permission to be curious. To look at the world around them and wonder...HOW things work, WHY things work, and WHAT could we do to make things even better? That curiosity is the perfect starting place for our STEM studies.

My third- and fourth-grade students are an amazing group of young people.

Many of them come to school with challenges such as uncertain housing conditions and unstable family situations in addition to the typical concerns of childhood. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment for them to learn and explore. Collaboration and teamwork are very important in my class because I want to instill a sense of family.

My Project

My students need supplies for exploring model rocketry with a rocket-building kits and engines. Learning is most satisfying and impactful when it is being applied in real-world settings. We study math, science, and engineering in the classroom. By having a model rocketry program, students are using what they learn in a tangible, exciting way. Rocketry allows them to work through the stages of project development, and it is a powerful opportunity for inquiry-based learning. Students will use the materials I'm requesting to study STEM-related skills and knowledge, culminating in the launching of their own model rockets.

One of the chief members of the NASA team that guides the Mars rover was once a student at my school.

I want my students to see that there is an exciting potential path from this classroom to an adult life of discovery, innovation, and world-impacting action. Starting with an opportunity to, literally, blast out the ordinary is a powerful way to move students down that path. I want them to be excited about science, engineering, and math and to see how relevant they are to a full, engaged life.
