B.L.A.S.T. Black Light Accentuates Self-Esteem & Talents!

Help me give my students some authentic world instruments, including a banjo, ukelele, djembe drum, costumes, and lighting supplies, as they become singers, dancers, and musicians in our school's annual Spring musical production.

My Students

I run the music and drama therapy program at my school which is a center for individuals with profound special needs. They come from all types of ethnic backgrounds, but most are from economically depressed areas. Their needs are affected by profound autism, Down syndrome, and multiple disabilities, both physical and cognitive. Some are even medically fragile. Most of my students are non-verbal, and many require wheelchairs for mobility.

Engaging with hands-on, direct musical experiences with other expressive arts, such as drama, movement, dance, and the visual arts, works magic for individuals with profound special needs.

My Project

Utilizing the highly motivational medium of black light, and combining this with music and drama, my students will play along on actual instruments, such as drums, bongos, ukelele, banjo, and other hands-on devices. They will perform to various songs and rhythms from throughout the world, including American bluegrass, African rhythms, sounds of the Orient, India, South American, Hawaii, and the Middle East. The highlight will be a musical production given at the school for the school & community that will feature my students singing, acting, and playing in the band.
