My Students
Our school serves students interested in the creative arts. Students major in theater, visual arts, vocal, orchestra, creative writing, and dance. We serve low income Milwaukee city students. We warmly welcome students of many cultures and backgrounds and support many refugee students as well as LGBTQ students.
We warmly welcome all students and celebrate their uniqueness.
Our program draws students from across Milwaukee who are compelled to create. Students regularly participate in the community with multiple performances and galleries each year.
My Project
Five years ago I was given two ol'timey blacksmith puzzles. When I need to distract, calm, focus, and challenge students who are having a hard time in class, these are the manipulatives to which I turn. The problem is, in a class of 34, two puzzles just aren't enough.
Their brains come alive when they get their hands on these traditional blacksmith puzzles!
These puzzles will be used in the classroom when a student is fidgety and needs something in their hands so they can concentrate on the reading. These puzzles will be used to bring learning those unexpected five minutes of time that sometimes happen, say after a fire drill. These puzzles will be used as a reward for students to complete tasks they are more reluctant to complete. These puzzles will be used to activate the critical thinking parts of the student's brain so that they will be more engaged in our discussions in class.
I love these particular puzzles because they are indestructible and will be used by students for many years to come, they have an alluring clanking sound that grabs their attention, and the challenge of the puzzle activates their brains when my traditional teaching assignments do not.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
