Black Lives Matter Book Set

Help me give my students a Black Lives Matter book set so we can explore the Black Lives Matter at School's Guiding Principles in powerful stories, poems, and art.

My Students

My classroom is always filled with a close-knit, family of students. We share a love for community and interest in each others' backgrounds and lives outside of school. Students come from many different types of families, whose heritage and makeup vary. In one corner students might be praying to Allah, while in another, one student helps another student translate text from English to Spanish. All of these differences provide many perspectives that make our conversations about literature and current events nuanced and evocative.

With the recurring news of Black people being harmed by racist policies and actions and the accompanying protests by activists of all backgrounds, schools need to show that Black Lives Matter.

I love that we have an opportunity to create a welcoming space to talk about the issues my students, families, and our community faces. I love that my students are courageous enough to participate in these tough conversations and come to school ready to learn from and with each other.

My Project

My classroom library at school has been amassed from donations from retiring teachers, the district's leveled text sets, and my own purchases. It does not get close to reflecting the cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity of my students. By creating a text set that focuses on Black lives, I will change the narrative my students see in the books around them.

The Black Lives Matter movement is about honoring the contributions of Black people, celebrating Black joy, and declaring that Black lives have immense value; this text set embodies that and connects to Black Lives Matter at School's 13 Guiding Principles.

By using half of the set to conduct read aloud spread throughout the entire year we will deeply explore and unpack each of the 13 Guiding Principles. During the week of Black Lives Matter at School, we will use the other half of the text set to partner read the shorter picture books so students can connect with the topic at an even more personal level. If we are still learning remotely, I will create video read aloud and activities for each book, that will support students to read along with me and discuss.
