Black History Month- Teaching Harlem Renaissance Thru Arts
My students need 21 packages of design papers and 4 gallons of Elmer's glue, 480 sheet package of tissue paper, 4 packages of assorted foam rollers, and 3 DVDs on African American artists.
In my school I serve a diverse population of students, many are English language learners and most are living in poverty level conditions. Our school is a Title 1 school(100% qualify for free lunches). I teach art to around 500 students from grades 3-8.
Our 'budget' is non-existent this year and I need to rely on any donations I can get for our art program. Since we are coming up on Black History month we are trying to really immerse our students, particularly our middle school students in the rich history of the Harlem Renaissance.
In order to really get the full experience of the Harlem Renaissance I need more materials. We will cover artists like Romare Bearden, Horace Pippin and Jacob Lawrence. I have requested some DVD's about these artists as well as printmaking and collage materials that will be used to experiment with materials in the style of these outstanding artists.
I know it is a short time frame-- February is Black History month, but I would love to get this project started as quickly as possible. With your support, we would have the full experience of dealing with enrichment materials.
Please help us have a fantastic learning experience through art. Thank you!
