This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.
I teach second grade in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.
Some students live below the poverty line, and their families struggle to provide them with basic necessities needed to be successful in school. Despite these obstacles, our school has hard-working students as well as teachers and staff who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.
My Project
My second grade students are learning how to conduct research and report writing. They will using what they have learned to do their own research on a historical figure for Black History Month. Students will choose a person to research and read a biography of the person. They will write a report and create a poster that will highlight what they have learned about the person. Students will also have to give an oral presentation to their classmates.
My students need a variety of biographies of historically important individuals to use for their Black History projects.
The books I am selecting represent people from different times and backgrounds - musicians, writers, leaders, activists, inventors, and athletes. My students have just learned about nonfiction text features, so they will be ready to tackle reading these biographies. I know my students will be excited to have great books to read as they learn new things.
