My Project

My students are very excited about Black History Month! They are researching, working on living statues projects, and learning about contributions, discoveries, and courageous acts by black scientists, writers, inventors, athletes, artists, leaders, and more. In music class, my students are tracing the roots of American Music that originated in Africa and was developed in the United States by African American musicians, from West African Folk Songs to Call-and-Response Songs, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, and other musical forms.

I love how my young musician's faces light up and they spontaneously clap, snap, stamp, and pat in time with songs like Fanga Alafia, Little Liza Jane, Lucy Rabbit, One Shoe Blues, Good News, and When the Saints Go Marching In--many falling in time with rhythmic complexity beyond their years!

My students are exploring how music is used in different settings: welcome songs, songs for clapping and stone-passing games, songs to make work easier, songs for dancing, songs for expressing disappointment and sadness, songs for celebration and praise, songs that tell a story, songs with coded messages, songs of freedom...

From West African drummers and dancers to Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Prince...and so many more...my students quickly join right in, singing, dancing and creating along with the great musical artists.

My students need more materials so students can work together in a variety of ways: drums, songs, stories, bean bags, and instruments for sound effects.

It takes a lot of different kinds of materials to establish a rich, comprehensive, systematic, culturally diverse music education for all. Thank you for helping my students develop and thrive!
