My Students
My second grade class is made of 28 amazing children. They range in diversity and ability. Some are Autistic, and many receive special education services. We are a Title I school, and all of my students are from low-income households, so they all receive free breakfast and lunch every day.
My students love learning, and they work very hard each day.
Their creativity inspires both me and each other. I am consistently humbled by their tenacious spirits, their loving hearts, and their curiosity about the world.
My Project
As part of our continuing efforts to celebrate Black joy and teach about more than just MLK or Rosa Parks, I am requesting a book for each classroom in our school that teaches about lesser-known Black history makers. Told through the lens of an elementary school girl who goes on an adventure to discover more about the contributions of Black people to our society, this book features a variety of Black Americans that truly made history through their inventions, ideas, and ingenuity.
It is my hope that this book will go beyond the traditional teachings of Black history through enslavement by teaching history through a narrative of joy, creativity, and success.
