I am the librarian at a small public school which is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. My school has 150 students of many diverse and unique backgrounds. We are a Title I school with well over 65% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Almost 15% of our students are homeless. Numerous families receive weekend food assistance in their child's backpack from our local food bank.
Many of my students are reluctant readers, and an academic success does not come easily or quickly.
In our school, we strive to create warm, safe, and welcoming classrooms while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
My Project
For many of my students, the only library they will ever visit is the school library. My students need to see themselves represented in the library materials that are available for them to read and use for research. I would like to update our media center collection to better reflect our school's unique population and inspire pride and knowledge of the contributions African Americans and women have made to make our country great.
Additionally, during Black History Month and Women's History Month, I would like to share some of these resources across the grade levels to make students aware of these significant multicultural American time periods.
I've asked for library binding or hard cover binding for these books so students for many years to come can enjoy and use these resources. With shrinking school budgets, often books for the media center are a low priority when basic school supplies are needed.
As curriculum continuously changes to meet a diverse student population, I need to make sure my students have access to modern, quality resources. With your help, my students will be ready and eager to reach their research and reading goals!
