Black Girl Magic Meets Cool Story, Bruh a Literary Club

Help me give my students their very own books and safe space for our Black Girl Magic and Cool Story, Bruh Literary Clubs for our students of color. This will give our culturally relevant literature and ownership.

My Students

As one of the largest middle schools in the district, a typical day can be an intense crash or collaboration of diverse youth from across all corners of the city. My youth are an inspired and compassionate group who want to be agents of change and justice through teaching empathy in their community.

These students have so much spirit and energy, and I am inspired by their drive and determination.

It is my charge to get these youth reengaged in their own education, social-emotional health, and self-advocacy. There are four students (2 female and 2 males) from varying grades who are taking on the facilitation of our project, and this is where our magical story will begin.

My Project

Our students of color have a difficulty making connections at school. In school you are supposed to be provide knowledge, safety, encouragement, and allowed to imagine, our students of color often do not feel connected in many if not all of these ways.

One problem is lack of time for teachers and staff to create and foster relationships with our students; this leads our youth to feel unseen and disenfranchised.

By providing weekly Lit Clubs with texts they can relate to and spend time with a trusted adult who shares their concerns, can and will help to get our students to feel safe, supported, and take ownership of their education.
