Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina. I work at a low income school with a high number of English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The students we have are eager, inquisitive, and quite amazing. I am very excited to start the year with a new group of students. Three very important things happen to students in first grade. 1. Students begin losing their teeth. It is very exciting to them! 2. Students learn to tie their own shoes. To some children it comes easy, to others, not so easy. 3. And, of course, students have birthdays throughout the year. In this proposal, I would like to purchase some things that would make these three events more meaningful to my first graders. 1. I found cute "I lost a tooth" stickers, a poster for graphing students' lost teeth, and plastic tooth holder necklaces. I also found a children's book that is filled with traditions from all over the world. What a way to make students feel special with the stickers and the necklaces. The graph would tie in math each time a student lost a tooth. Whoever lost a tooth would get to read the special tooth book for silent reading. 2. Students who have difficulty tying shoes can practice on 'lacing sneakers.' My children can slip their shoe into it and try to tie the laces. This can be used at center time. How exciting it will be when a student finally learns how to tie their shoes. 3. Students will feel extremely special when they wear a birthday crown, write with a birthday pencil, and work in a birthday activity book. We will celebrate the half-birthdays of those students who have summer birthdays. These items may seem trivial to adults, but make each student feel special on their day. Thank you for your time in reading my proposal.
