My Students
"We can't wait to be back!" was a quote I heard more than once this summer. As an art teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many are being raised by grandparents.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students are creative and enthusiastic to learn.
These circumstances that are beyond their control limit them from experiencing life experiences many of us see as "typical". In my classroom, they are able to experience where art might take them. Drawing, painting, and creating in 3 dimensions as well as learning about artists, many of which had circumstances that they can relate to. All contribute to an art program that encourages thinking and problem solving, explores diversity and excites the students.
My Project
The large print of a Live Oak Tree will be a central focus to return to again and again while we are studying the habitats of North American Birds and ultimately creating artworks that not only include art principles and elements but STEM concepts.
The study of birds and trees will engage the students who have access to many of these habitats near our school.
Having the poster of North American Birds and the Leaf Rubbing plates will give the students reference materials and allow hands-on learning. The book on Audubon will engage young learners who may also have a love of nature.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
