My Project

What I love most about my students is their curiosity—the way their eyes light up when they discover something new, and their eagerness to explore the world. This birding STEM project includes hands-on, inquiry-based learning rooted in real-world experiences.

The Birds of Montana reference guide is a powerful tool for STEM education because it connects students with the Montana ecosystem as a living classroom to make learning relevant and grounded in students’ natural surroundings.

It is important that each student has their own guide to use when needed. Students can use information from this book and apply skills across STEM disciplines: using math to track bird populations, technology to map migration patterns, engineering for feeder, nest, beak and wingspan challenges, and science to understand ecosystems and adaptations.

By giving students a tangible connection to wildlife right outside their windows, the guide helps make learning relevant and meaningful. Our school is walking distance from many great birding habitats. This program will foster a deeper appreciation for biodiversity, conservation, and the importance of data in making environmental decisions. It turns local nature into a living laboratory—where every call in the trees becomes a chance to learn and develop their sense of place.
