This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in an inner city setting where gang activity creates an unsafe environment to play outside after school. Our kids are limited with respect to their experiences, so I would like to broaden their horizons by and give them experience playing sports that can be played at home and inside the safety of the school, as the surrounding area tends to have the hazards of inner-city happenings.
We are fortunate to have nets and racquets for badminton, however, the birdies that we received years ago have been used to the point of no return.
My district has not issued any funds to replace any old equipment. My students deserve more than the excuse "our lack of budget cannot provide".
Yet, the students continue to rise above and come to school eager to learn and excited each morning to come to be educated! In light of the aforementioned, providing my kids with new birdies and balls for play, it will enable me to open up their world to a safe, indoor or outdoor activity that they can have fun and get much needed exercise, with sports that are not readily available to them.
My Project
We currently have tennis and badminton racquets to utilize for our elementary aged group, however due to lack of budget, we have not been able to replace the worn equipment in the past ten years.
The shuttlecocks have since crumbled and the weighted heads have since broken off.
The foam tennis balls work fabulously for teaching and indoor play, but they too have crumbled with use and are not circular anymore.
New shuttlecocks and foam tennis balls will be utilized in classes K-8 to instruct and train the students with skills necessary for both tennis and badminton play will allow the children to learn and explore safe indoor activities in there inner city environment.
