Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I (low-income) school in East Oakland. I teach science to students with limited or interrupted formal education, who are primarily indigenous Mam speakers from Guatemala. Most of them are in their first year in the US -- what a year to arrive! COVID-19 has them learning from home, many without access to technology, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment. Even so, they're highly motivated to achieve and looking for more opportunities to learn.

My Project

Distance learning has forced me to rethink the way I teach science. My students are learning to read and write for the first time in a second or third language, and many still do not have laptops or internet at home. My school has been working very hard on getting them this technology, but even so, you can't do the hands-on experimentation that's central to doing science over Zoom. I want to give them that experience, and get them outside!

I am requesting the materials to help my students explore the natural world through nature journaling and field sketching.

I am requesting binoculars and magnifying glasses to introduce students to citizen science, birding, and naturalist work at home -- and support them in becoming keen observers of the natural world. I am also requesting quality watercolors, notebooks, and colored pencils to help students make nature field journals that they can take pride in. I hope to use these materials to help support my students in observing the nature around them and becoming citizen scientists.
