This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work for a Title I school where the students are low income and below grade level in math and reading. My students learn best through hands-on applications, manipulation of materials and engaging projects. They are always eager to create art in the classroom.

They are always asking why we need to learn math and how to apply math to real life applications.

This project will help my students understand why it is important to learn how to divide fractions.

My Project

My students struggle with basic computation in math. They do not see why they need to learn math or even how to apply math to their lives. I want my students to see that mathematics can help them better understand and describe the world around them.

I will present my students with a list of materials and instructions on how to build a bird feeder.

But in order to do that they will to take the material s and divide them in fourths so every person in their group will have the same measurement of each material. This where their knowledge of dividing fractions will help in their measurements.

After they figure out the measurements then they will follow the instructions to hot glue gun the Popsicle sticks to create their bird feeder.

My students love to create art in the classroom. They are more engaged and excited about their learning when they are able to create art, manipulative materials and are given a hands-on experience. These are the projects they remember, love and learn from the most.
