My students are wonderful girls and boys who are respectful and work hard to learn. They are well-behaved and have bright futures. I teach in a Headstart through 12th-grade school. The parents are hard-working people who struggle to make ends meet. Because of the low economic area and poor families, I ask for very little on the school supply list. I catch myself spending a lot of my own personal money on classroom needs, but I know that it benefits my students and that one day, they will make a difference in this world.
My Project
We study the Biomes that make up the Earth through units of study. I coordinate Science with reading. When we read a fiction or nonfiction story that has a specific Biome in it we research facts about the Biome represented in the book. Teaching this way not only enables the student to get a more concrete picture of the subject they are reading but also gives a "Spark of Imagination and Excitement" to the learning. When students can see content in print and on video and can point out the content being studied (in this case Biomes) critical thinking has been achieved. They show that they can apply and use the knowledge they have learned.
The students will be rewarded for their study and hard work in Science and Reading with a night to take home and watch a DVD that depicts the subject matter they have been studying in Science and Reading Class.
They will also be able to use the projector to display the work they created in class so that the entire class can view it.
The various DVDs depict: Rainforests, Jungles, Forests, Tundra, Oceans, Deserts, Arctic, Environmental Issues, and Animals that live on the Earth. All of the videos will be analyzed for their themes ( life messages or lessons learned), plot, characters, settings, time periods etc... and other standards that we cover in class. They will also be able to see these stories through the print version (books) which will be put in the classroom reading center.
