Biomedical Books

My students need access to the best books about the medical field. These memoirs and collections of essays will provide an insight into the world of medicine.

My Students

In our classroom, we read for the first ten minutes of the period. Students can choose whatever book they want as long as they are reading. This practice has boosted student engagement and reading comprehension. Now we need more books to keep our reading going.

Next year I will be teaching an English class for aspiring medical professionals.

These students have all expressed a desire to enter into the medical field. The class will provide them the opportunity to learn about reading and writing as the learn about the careers they hope to peruse after they graduate from high school. The classroom will include young men and women interested in nursing, dentistry, psychology, surgery and everything in between. Some of these students struggle with the standard English curriculum while others have straight A's. All of them will benefit from this collection of writing about the glory and struggle of the medical field.

My Project

Many students want to be a nurse or a doctor when they are young, but not many of them understand how the medical field works or what they must sacrifice to be successful. Our new Biomedical English course will expose students to the rigors and raptures of working in medicine. The books in this grant proposal illustrate the broad sweep of the medical field. With these books my students will be reading the words of successful doctors who describe what their lives entail in the operating room or working with patients. My hope is that these books will encourage my students to dig deeper into their chosen profession and seek out mentors in the medical community to guide them through their education.

The medical profession is a noble endeavor.

Unfortunately, these careers often seem beyond many of our poorest students or students who think they don't have what it takes. I want to provide opportunities for my students to understand what a career in medicine looks like. By reading these memoirs and essays, I believe that students will be more prepared to enter the medical field and become the best professionals they can be.
