Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My high school biology students use these resources to support the care and well-being of small pets, including guinea pigs, hamsters, a bearded dragon, and a crested gecko, housed in our classroom sanctuary. These animals provide a unique, hands-on opportunity for students to observe and study living organisms closely, enhancing their understanding of animal biology, behavior, and needs.
Through daily interaction and care, students develop practical skills in animal care and management while deepening their understanding of key biological concepts aligned with NGSS, such as ecosystems, interdependent relationships, and the structure and function of organisms.
This experience also fosters important personal qualities like empathy and responsibility, encouraging students to think critically about the roles organisms play in their environments.
Students will engage in scientific practices by observing, analyzing, and caring for classroom animals to develop an evidence-based understanding of animal needs, behaviors, and ecosystem interactions, aligned with NGSS performance expectations related to ecosystems, organismal structure, and survival.
