My Students

The NOOK Color is the ultimate reading experience. It is much more than just a cool new gadget that I want for my students. It is an innovative tool that will truly have my students engaged in their reading and excited to share the experience of reading with others.

I teach grades 9-12 at a magnet school for math, science, and technology, in an area of high poverty.

I primarily teach 9th and 10th grade Honors Biology, but I also teach 11th and 12th grade Honors Biology II and Honors Anatomy & Physiology. My students are visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners and could benefit from using a Nook Color in my classroom. My students, like most teenagers, LOVE technology and this tool combines technology with literacy! I have a real passion for biology and literacy. I cannot speak enough about the power of reading. This tool offers a unique way to incorporate reading into my biology classroom.

My Project

Besides having access to an array of over 2 million books, from New York Times bestsellers to award-winning novels and classics, NOOK Color offers an ever-growing list of the best magazines and newspapers in rich, vivid color. Daily newspaper and latest magazine issues automatically download wirelessly to your NOOK Color every morning! My students will have a whole new way to explore articles and stories, in full-color, as they interact with the words and pictures. With a NOOK Color, my students would have access to current events pertaining to our topic of study in biology.

The technology could be used for research when discussing biological concepts.

Articles of interest from newspapers or magazines, as well as numerous books could serve as read alouds for my students. Reading aloud is a great way to motivate older readers to improve vocabulary and reading skills. Studies show that reading to students has significant impact on learning. With YOUR help, my students can become engaged learners, independent thinkers, and problem solvers… the possibilities are ENDLESS!
