Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students are turned off by science because they're intimidated by the content, and they have a difficult time relating it to their lives. My goal is to create an open and inviting environment where all students feel like they can be scientists.
My students are from the South Bronx.
Due to the issues my students face on an everyday basis, many of my students have an interest in fields that serve others. Because of this, I've created an Investigative Biology course which allows students to dive into the role of scientists and medical professionals. This allows students to use science to fuel their interest in social and biological issues that directly affect their lives.
My Project
I teach a life science course that focuses on Anatomy. Much of my department and the Math department has been working hard to integrate more STEM-related curriculum into our classroom.
Integrating STEM into my classroom curriculum will help me create cross-curricular lessons and help my students make sense of science in a brand new way.
Allowing my students to do STEM exercises has been something I've struggled with, however, these resources will be used by my students to learn how engineering saves lives in the medical field. My students will use this resource along with the curriculum that I already have to play the role of engineers in the medical field.
