Our school is in San Jose. I have been teaching at LES for 17 years and love the population of our students. We have a very diverse population and my language arts instruction is for students at many levels and abilities. In our district, reading instruction has focused largely on fiction literature.
Recently, with the introduction of Common Core, we have been introducing more and more non-fiction.
I have a few of the "Who Was?" books in my classroom library and am finding that the students LOVE them. Even my reluctant readers ask for more books in this series! If I had the whole set, I could do so much more with biography and non-fiction. The non-fiction book set I am asking for in this project will benefit students in my language arts classes for many years to come.
My Project
Our 5th-grade class is in need of some high-interest, easy readability biographies to enhance our non-fiction work. I would like a variety of choices for my students to be able to pick a person of interest to them for study and research. The "Who Was?" series provides all that.
Working with biographies allows students to see many people who have overcome difficulties, persevered in the face of failure, and have achieved goals.
The "Who Was?" biography series includes people to study from many different cultures and backgrounds so my students can learn about role models from all walks of life.
