I have a classroom of 20 low to middle income third grade students. Many of the students are not currently meeting grade level expectations. They are all capable of meeting those expectations with that extra little push that I hope to give them each and every day.
While the students in my class came in below grade level, through the school year we have seen immense improvement in their achievement levels.
This has been obtained through the use of multiple teaching strategies that include: center based learning, project based learning, direct instruction, flipped instruction, small group instruction, intensive instruction, and even an attempted use of alternative seating.
My Project
This will be the 3rd year that we are attempting to have our third graders research and perform in a living wax museum. Our first two years have gone wonderfully, and we received a great amount of praise from the over 100 parents that attended.
We are looking to expand our horizons as we continue to create a living wax museum through more choices of biographies that showcase a wider variety of cultures.
I hope by having a wide variety of picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels to choose from, that each student will be able to find a historical figure that they can relate and connect to.
