This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students these days need manipulatives to practice scientific inquiry in the classroom...books just don't cut it anymore. Biology and biochemistry are up and coming job fields that our American children need to be enthusiastic about, and having these materials will get them there quicker.

My students range from level 1 to level 5 on the Connecticut Mastery Test and are heterogeneously mixed throughout the classrooms.

When they perform lab inquiry I pair them according to ability. We are a Title 1 school and on level 4 of the "No Child Left Behind" Act. If our school misses its AYP target for the fourth consecutive year, the school is labeled as requiring "corrective action," which might involve wholesale replacement of staff, introduction of a new curriculum, or extending the amount of time students spend in class.

My Project

With a Bunsen Burner I can very accurately control the level of heat. This is important when conducting experiments. It improves the accuracy of the research. They are used for everything from heating solutions to killing bacteria on an inoculating loop. My students will not use the bunson burners, however I will be able to use guided instruction and inquiry experiments that I am unable to do at the moment. Also, the cell slides will be used to study the different types of cells, including the blood stain and skin cell slides for a forensics experiment on a "crime scene" investigation where the students have to find the killer in the classroom. I will be having a forensics scientist to visit our classroom and explain why and how forensics is important in catching criminals.

The donations you help us with will allow my students to experience biology and biochemistry like a college student would.

I want my students to have a chance to understand science in a different way...by enjoying what they learn and have fun while creating and discovering methods in science. Our country needs more scientists to keep up with the surrounding countries that are leading us in science and math and I will do whatever it takes to help our children improve themselves.
