Binoculars for Little Bitty Birders!

Help me give my students binoculars, specimens jars, and tweezers for outdoor exploration and fun! With these tools, I will have enough to fully supply two full grade levels, around 200 hundred kids!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into class every day full of wonder, full of energy, and full of resilience. Each day in the classroom is a chance to shine and start fresh no matter what outside distractions may await them at home or in their community. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.

I teach at a Title I school in Massachusetts, where 61% percent of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.

A handful of students receive food for the weekend and we have Catie's Closet on hand for students that need clothing. We have students from a variety of backgrounds. We have students that have just arrived in the United States, special education students, students with visual and auditory deficits, and students with trauma. My students are so much more than these descriptions. These amazing kids just want a chance, a glimpse into a future where they are allowed to dream big!

My Project

These exploration packs will be the foundation for the start of a new initiative to get students learning outside. With the ever changing landscape of education, especially in this past year, I want to be able to evolve my teaching to blend outdoor learning with indoor learning.

Students will be able look for birds and other wildlife with their brand new binoculars!

They will have the opportunity to collect specimens, observe, touch, listen, and smell their way through nature. Life cycle of plants and bugs as well as evidence of natural erosion are all standards that can be hit while experiencing the outdoors. With your help I can begin to build two grade level kits that we can take outside and then sanitize nightly. I am determined to find new ways to engage students despite our new and ever changing social distancing and sanitation guidelines. Together, we can do great things! Thank you so much in advance!
