This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coming from more than 20 countries, and speaking over a dozen languages, my students are a daily reminder how big and small the world really is. Through their varied educations, upbringings, and personal stories, they come together to learn English and science with me.

No matter where they are from, just about every student knows about birds, but I want to teach them how to love birds.

Birds face many of the the same issues my students face in the city - pollution, lack of green space, and overcrowded streets. I hope that by studying birds in our environment, students will see how improving habitat for birds benefits people, as well.

My Project

Through their varied experiences, one thing students all agree upon is that we are all citizens of one environment and one Earth, and we need to learn about and take care of it. What I teach in my science class is that before we can solve any problem, we need to understand it through observation. Birds, although in plain sight, aren't easy to observe without help.

These binoculars will bring us a step closer to my goal that every student have a pair of binoculars when we go birdwatching.

The binoculars I am requesting through this project will allow them to observe up close the birds that live within and move through our community.

Students will be active participants in citizen science, recording bird species, numbers, and behavior so they can contribute to the massive database of bird data run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: eBird.org.

My students will use their observations, as well as the wealth of information on eBird, to design habitat improvements to beautify our cityscape with more birds and bird diversity. Please help me put binoculars into the eager hands of my young scientists!
