Binding Our Own Books!

Help me give my students a classroom binding machine to finalize predictable chart writing books!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Waldbaum's classroom raised $167

My Students

I have the pleasure of having such an amazing and diverse group of students. My students have been placed in a self-contained classroom for students labeled as having multiple disabilities. My students have disabilities that range from intellectual to physical disabilities, to other health impairments.

My students require intensive, individualized, and frequent instruction to allow them to be as functional & independent within the community.

Some skills that are of the utmost importance are communication skills (having their own communication system), basic math skills (like number recognition), & basic literacy skills (like identifying letters or their names).

Most importantly, despite disabilities and being in a low-income area, they are great students. They are crazy, fun-loving, determined, and bright young minds. They make my day interesting and not one single day is the same. That's the life of a special education classroom, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

My Project

In a classroom like mine, we do an activity called predictable chart writing. For example, we start our writing lesson with a prompt, like "Music we like." Students are given samples of different types music and they indicate what they like & we use the sentence stem to build from that. For example, "I like Justin Bieber," "I like Taylor Swift," "I like Blake Shelton," and so on. So the lesson runs the course of the week. Mondays we create the chart in front of kids. Tuesdays we reread the chart and point out the words, names, letters, etc. Wednesdays we write the sentence on a sentence strip & cut it up. Thursdays we put the sentence in order with a fun game of musical chairs/words. Friday, we make and "publish" the book by adding pictures to our sentences. We typically just staple the book, but my kiddos are heavy handed and staples do not last.

If we have our own book binding machine it makes our class-written books more official (and much more sturdy).

I can send these home with the kids, so they can continue to practice their core words at home too!

In this project I have a binding machine, binding combs, lamination & some classroom books to help guide these lessons.
