This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in business and promotes project-based learning for college and career readiness which includes career and financial management.

My classroom promotes a culture of the learning environment by creating high-performing, project-based learning, in a simulated workplace that allows students to learn in ways that are beneficial to their unique needs. However, they struggle to stay organized and on-task at competitive levels due to our lack of binder resources necessary to function in their workplace classroom.

Many of the students are living at or below the poverty line, whether at home or in temporary shelters. Their families have very little to no extra money to fund school supplies.

With more binder resources comes more organization, strengthening knowledge, implementation of strategies, finding real-world connections, and multiple entry points that differentiate content, process, and products based upon the specific financial literacy skill they need to master to succeed in the 21st century.

My Project

As part of the curriculum in my classroom, students run and operate a simulated business. These cataloging binders and pouches are needed to help the students organize and catalog their business plan projects and company records. All too often students lose track of their project pieces due to lack of resources, nowhere to hold or file their paperwork. These cataloging binders and pouches will help them to print and store files (employment portfolios, sales and marking invoices, catalogs, branding guides, brochures, finance payroll, balance sheets, cash budgets, income statements) in a neat and orderly fashion, keeping them on track and more engaged throughout their project-based learning activities while further strengthening and developing college and career readiness skills as they complete their projects.
